How do I know if my pet is having and emergency?

You know your pet best so if you are concerned please call us or come to CVRC.

Some conditions which may require emergency care include:

  • Trauma, including those hit by cars, bite, bullet, knife or burn injuries
  • Trouble or difficulty breathing
  • Shock (signs of shock can include weakness, pale mucous membranes in their mouth, cold extremities, and an abnormal heart rate)
  • Trouble or difficulty urinating or defecating
  • Neurologic disease such as seizures, difficulty or inability to walk, collapse or lack of responsiveness
  • Toxin ingestion
  • Abnormal or extended recovery from anesthesia or a surgical procedure
  • Swollen or distended abdomen
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Allergic reaction, such as hives or swelling
  • Difficulty whelping (dystocia)

What to do in case of an emergency:

  • Stay calm.
  • Handle your pet carefully.  Scared or injured pets can sometimes be aggressive.
  • If possible, call CVRC to alert us that you are on your way in.
  • Drive carefully to CVRC.
