Dr. Krista DeRespino grew up in a large family of herself and three younger sisters in Bradenton, Florida. A career as a veterinarian has been a goal of hers since the age of 4. After high school, Dr. DeRespino attended the University of Florida on an academic scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. She then went on to earn a master's degree in the reproductive endocrinology of dairy cattle, which gave her invaluable exposure to medical and scientific research, as well as an education in animal industry. She continued to work as a veterinary technician during this time, where she adopted a foster dog that never left, named Nugget. Following graduate school, Krista moved first to Berkeley, California, and then Los Angeles, working as a veterinary technician in various hospitals while she applied to veterinary school. In Los Angeles, she worked at a large specialty hospital with a strong internship program, Animal Specialty and Emergency Center (ASEC), which helped her recognize the importance of advanced training beyond veterinary school.
In 2010 Krista was accepted to the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary medicine, and happily made the cross country trek back to Gainesville, Florida. Veterinary school only added to Dr. DeRespino’s love of emergency medicine. During veterinary school, she also worked as an emergency veterinary technician at a local hospital. Dr. DeRespino graduated with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in May, 2014. Following veterinary school, she returned to Los Angeles and completed a one year small animal surgery and medicine internship at Animal Specialty and Emergency Services. During her internship, she experienced a large and varied case load, as well as great mentorship that helped evolve her medicine and critical care skills tremendously.
Missing the east coast, Dr. DeRespino moved to Greenville, SC where she brought her skills to the Animal Emergency Clinic. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with Charleston’s beautiful beaches and culture while visiting friends and accepted a position with Charleston Veterinary Referral Center in November, 2015. Dr. DeRespino loves the challenges that emergency medicine provides, as well as the satisfaction of seeing critical patients recover and walk out of the hospital back into their loving homes and families. She knows that often the most exciting cases for an ER doctor are some of the most stressful for the pet’s owner, and she prioritizes keeping families informed and prepared to meet the challenges as their pet receives care.
Her favorite aspects of veterinary emergency medicine include cardiac emergencies, trauma cases and meeting the unique needs of elderly patients. Krista feels truly lucky to be surrounded by so many compassionate veterinarians and a patient care team that are truly at the top of their fields at CVRC.
In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor adventures with her two rescue mutts, Mochi and Nugget, cooking, cultivating her garden and riding her bike in the beautiful Charleston weather.
